FTO基因全称脂肪和肥胖相关基因（Fat mass and obesity-associated），在人类基因组中位于16号染色体，此基因编码的FTO蛋白属AlkB家族（即与细菌的AlkB蛋白同源[6][7]），为α-酮戊二酸依赖性羟化酶[6]。此基因可能与肥胖症有关[8][9]。2011年何川实验室发现FTO蛋白可将mRNA上的N6-甲基腺苷（m⁶A）去甲基化成腺苷（A），为第一个被发现的mRNA去甲基酶[10][11]。
