开眼亚目

开眼亚目，又称鎗乌贼、鱿鱼亚目，[1][2]是身体细长、呈长锥形，有十只触腕、其中两只明显较长，肉鳍只集中在头部；开眼亚目另一个明显特征是在所有的触手的吸盘上都带有倒钩刺，虽然小型鱿鱼的倒钩刺可能作为一种口感被人类食用，但是大型鱿鱼的却成为所有无脊椎动物门中最具有攻击性的触手。

开眼亚目和闭眼亚目一同属于管鱿目，和墨鱼目（即墨鱼）、八腕总目（即章鱼）一样都会喷墨、会变化颜色、嘴里也像牠们一样有鹦鹉嘴状的齿舌口器；鱿鱼因为身体细长、呈流线型而非常适合游泳，但是快速移动时只能以喷射的方式直线后退，灵活性不如墨鱼、脑容量更是远低于章鱼，不过游泳速度却是头足纲内最快的，有些物种甚至可以「飞」出水面一小段距离[3]。

分类及名称上的混淆

管鱿目下包括鱿鱼和锁管，英文中的“squid”，指的就是管鱿目下两大亚目的动物总称，可以和中文的「鱿鱼」对应。闭眼亚目的动物在中文里总称为锁管；开眼亚目的动物则还是为鱿鱼，故“鱿鱼”一词配合规范中文的语境会有着2种意思，一个是指管鱿目、一个是指开眼亚目。另外，亦有部分分类把开眼亚目提升成为开眼目（Oegopsida）又可称鱿鱼目。

    天敌

    一般的海鱼要想捕猎鱿鱼并不容易，因为鱿鱼的墨汁还含有毒素，可以用来麻痹敌害。海豚是鱿鱼的天敌之一，海豚会绕过烟幕穷追鱿鱼。海豚只食用鱿鱼的头部，一只海豚能吞下成百只鱿鱼的头。抹香鲸也是其天敌之一。
