成年金星果树高10米左右，树干灰色，叶面光滑，有茸毛，半革质的叶呈卵圆形或长椭圆形，暗绿色，叶背金黄色，长16至18厘米。果实苹果状，熟时黄色，横剖面可见星状的白色果肉从果心向外放射，故名星苹果。果肉未熟时有白色乳汁，似牛奶，又名牛奶果。
