生平
出生于台湾。1981年姚鸿泽在国立台湾大学数学系获学士学位，1987年于普林斯顿大学获博士学位。1988年加入纽约大学任教授，1994年在该校库兰特数学科学研究所任全职教授；2003年在斯坦福大学任教授，然后于2005年在哈佛大学任教授。他在1987至1988年，1991年至1992年和2003年都是普林斯顿高等研究院的一员，并于2013-14担任资深访问学者。
哈佛大学艺术及科学院院长柯伟林教授曾说：「姚教授是数学物理领域之先锋，对几率、随机过程、非平衡态、统计物理及量子力学有重大贡献，提供重大的研究观念及方法。」
