祖恒星
有两个选择：25-40太阳质量的大质量恒星，或低质量，8-10太阳质量的小恒星。由于目前没有证据表明恒星坍缩后形成了中子星，它的光谱显示可能是质量较高的恒星。
残骸
观察SN 1997D的光度曲线显示在扩张的包层内没有其他的能量来源，因此似乎没有创造出中子星。所有的证据都显示可能创造出3倍太阳质量的黑洞。
