Commonwealth传统意义上指为促进共同利益而成立的政治群体，历史上与共和主义（Republicanism）同义，可被用来指单一的共和国，因此在这种意义下译为国家。现今可指称一群主权国家的联合体，例如“Commonwealth of Nations”翻译为英联邦，“Commonwealth of Independent States”翻译为独立国家联合体。美国有四个州的正式名称为“Commonwealth”：肯塔基州、麻萨诸塞州、宾夕法尼亚州、弗吉尼亚州，此时可翻译为“州”或“邦”。
