火山兔

火山兔（Romerolagus diazi），又名墨西哥兔，是生活在墨西哥山区一种细小的兔。牠们是世界第二最细小的兔，仅次于侏兔。牠们的耳朵很圆，脚短，毛短而厚。牠们以小群生活，成员约有2-5名。牠们会发出很高音的声音来警告其他兔子。牠们是夜间活动的。牠们重390-600克。于1969年统计，牠们野外只有1000-1200只。

栖息地

火山兔分布在墨西哥，只限于伊斯塔西瓦特尔火山、佩拉多火山、波波卡特佩特火山及特拉洛克火山。牠们一般栖息在海拔2800-4250米的针叶林及岩石地带。

食性

火山兔吃萨卡通草的叶子及赤杨的树皮等。在雨季，牠们会吃麦及谷类等农作物。

保育状况

火山兔的衰落是因失去栖息地及猎杀所致。[1]牠们的栖息地受到山火、过度放牧、城市及农业发展及伐林等破坏。[1]故此，已有计划保护牠们的栖息地，以保护牠们。另外，在一些动物园亦已有培育的计划。
