分类命名与历史
该属由德国鸟类学家路德维希·赖兴巴赫于1853年创建，并指定了大鹱作为本属模式种。[3][1]属名来自于1603年意大利科学家乌利塞·阿尔德罗万迪给予信天翁的名字「Ardenna」或「Artenna」。[4]
分类学
在生物分类学中，水薙鸟属被创建后有一段时间一直被视为是剪水鹱属的异名，即本属成员都被归于剪水鹱属下。[5]一份于2004年对鹱科鸟类粒线体DNA的研究显示，剪水鹱属为一多系群，本属因而被重新「复活」。[6][7]而2022年的研究也支持了这一分类。[8]
