命名與分類學

本屬由法國博物學家勒內-普里梅韋勒·萊松於1831年為斑嘴巨䴙䴘建立，而該物種也因單型而成為該屬模式種。[1][3]其屬名來自於英國生態學家約翰·萊瑟姆早先命名的鸊鷉屬。[4]
